A
choice always starts with the requirement. Thus, you ask: does
this degree require me to furnish a thesis or a dissertation?
Knowing that the choice is conveniently made for you settles the
score.
But if
it were the other way, if you were actually given the choice, which
of the two will you choose? Your choice will highly be dependent of
the following points:
- Original content: Both research works require original content. In a unique twist, thesis requires originality in treatment of existing literature; while dissertations demand originality in treatment of output – that meant producing research findings using your own parameters.

- Where: In the Americas, a Master’s degree will require a thesis. In UK, the degree will be about the dissertation piece.
If you
were to base your decision to the fact that you’re doing your
Master’s in UK, and want to come strong in your research
qualifications, then dissertation wins!
Now, to
help you nail your academic piece, below is a handy list of tips to
choose:
- Start it right with your advisor. Your advisor is expected to wear as much hats as possible – a tough critic, writing consultant, morale coach, et cetera. To make it easy for him/her, maintain an air of professionalism and politeness. Learn to trust your advisor’s judgement – and not challenge it.
- Organise your calendar. Retrofit your daily routines to allocate a sufficient amount of time for dissertation writing. At the same time, add some time for relaxation and leisure to help you rejuvenate for the very long research and writing session.
- Appreciate the help you could get. Your partner may decide to do the laundry today, or walk the dog. Your buddy could volunteer to take the kids into the park. Whatever it is that surfaces as a ‘rescue unit’ for you take it and express gratitude.
These
clarifications and tips should help you succeed in your Masters
degree.
But sometimes we have to take the course despite of the requirement since its the course/degree that we want to have.
